P5 and P6 students at Anglo-Chinese School (Primary) explored Design Thinking and sustainability by building programmable solar buses from upcycled Meiji Singapore milk cartons.
In November 2024, Code Gakko ran a STEM Interdisciplinary Project Work programme at Anglo-Chinese School (Primary), in which Primary 5 and Primary 6 students tackled sustainability challenges through Design Thinking.
Students learned about solar power circuits, programmed solar-powered buses, and built creative prototypes using upcycled Meiji Singapore milk cartons as the base material. The finished buses were tested and raced to see which design could travel the greatest distance — an exercise that turned friction, weight distribution and gear connection into problems students had to solve themselves, rather than concepts to memorise.
The programme was aligned with the Singapore Green Plan 2030, and emphasised teamwork, innovation and the practical meaning of sustainability. Students had to consider how their bus would function in real-world conditions, including a hybrid battery pack so it could keep operating on rainy or cloudy days.
