Our school programmes now extend into the home. Code Gakko Makers is a guided, project-based maker programme for students aged 9–14, built on the same Design Thinking philosophy we use in classrooms.
For ten years, Code Gakko has designed and delivered STEM programmes inside schools — Applied Learning Programmes, Interdisciplinary Project Work, Maker CCAs and camps. The question we heard most often from parents was a simple one: what happens after the programme ends?
Code Gakko Makers is our answer. It is a home-based maker programme for students aged 9–14, built on the same Design Thinking and Maker Education philosophy as our school work. Every student begins with the BBC micro:bit before progressing into Scratch, Tinkercad, Canva and AI tools, combining them into increasingly sophisticated builds.
Every build follows the same four-part structure — Learn, Build, Reflect, Share. Students work through guided lessons with video walkthroughs and handouts, make something real with physical components, answer structured prompts about what they made and why, and save the result to a portfolio they keep.
Learning does not stay on the screen. Each theme comes with a real-world learning journey — places to visit, things to observe, questions to ask — so the build connects to somewhere the student has actually stood. A solar project means looking at how a building catches light; a water project means finding where water actually goes.
Parents do not need to know how to code. Every build ships with a full set of parent resources: a facilitator guide, discussion prompts, common pitfalls, a plain-English glossary and a Helping Without Doing primer. Help Guides sit at every step in the platform, and instructor support hours are available when a build genuinely gets stuck.
Students are not working alone either. Finished builds can be shared to a community showcase, where students see what others made from the same brief — which is usually nothing like their own solution, and that is the point.
Projects are anchored in real-world themes — City in Nature, Sustainable Living, Energy Reset, Green Economy, Resilient Future, and Health & Ageing Well — and the scaffolding lifts as students gain confidence, moving from guided builds to open-ended How Might We challenges and finally to entirely original prototypes.
Every completed build becomes a portfolio entry: code, photos, and the student's own written reflection, exported as a shareable link or a verified PDF. Something real to bring to a school, a Direct School Admission panel, or a competition.
Makers is also available to schools. Teachers can bulk-add students and manage lessons on the platform, with billing handled via Vendors@Gov, making it a natural extension for schools already running an Applied Learning Programme, Interdisciplinary Project Work, a CCA or a makerspace.

AI can generate answers faster than any student can. What it cannot do is decide which problem is worth solving. That remains a distinctly human skill — and it is best developed by making things.
